Night Nurse and Overnight Newborn Care in Toronto

Expert newborn care while you and your family rest.

Boboto provides in-home overnight newborn care so parents can have longer, more protected periods of rest between feeds. Depending on the family’s needs and the matched practitioner, care may be provided by a postpartum doula, newborn care specialist or CNO-registered nurse.

Postpartum Doula Support in Toronto.
From newborn to recovery.

Postpartum care is not about performing parenthood for you. It is about reducing the number of things you must hold at once, while helping you build the skills and confidence to care for your baby in a way that fits your family.

  • rest while your baby is safely and lovingly cared for

  • receive practical help with nursing, pumping, bottle or combination feeding

  • eat, shower or attend an appointment in your home

  • learn soothing, diapering, bathing and babywearing skills

  • enjoy simple nourishing foods prepared for you

  • talk through questions without judgment

  • keep bottles, pump parts and baby laundry manageable

  • make a realistic plan for the hours after the doula leaves

What an Overnight Newborn Care shift includes

Our standard eight-hour shift can be scheduled from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., with other times also available upon request. The plan is reviewed at the start of the night and adapted to the baby’s age, feeding needs and the parents’ preferences.

Feeding support

Your night nurse follows your family’s feeding plan, whether that means offering expressed milk or formula, preparing bottles or bringing your baby to you for nursing.

Newborn care and settling

Burping, diapering, soothing and resettling are handled throughout the night, with care guided by your baby’s cues and current safe-sleep recommendations.

Nighttime reset and prep

Bottles and pump parts used during the shift are washed, feeding supplies are reset and the immediate care area is kept organized for the night ahead.

Monitoring and review

Feeds, diapers and settling are documented, parents are contacted according to the agreed escalation plan, and a concise morning update helps you know how the night went.

What an Overnight Newborn Care shift actually looks like.

Your baby may feed more or less often than this example, and nursing or pumping parents may still need to wake during the night. The goal of overnight postpartum care is not to promise uninterrupted sleep, but to take as much of the surrounding work off your plate as your feeding plan safely allows.

10:00PM

Arrival, check-in and priorities

Night nurse arrives, reviews how the day went, confirms feeding plans and notes anything your baby may need overnight.

10:30PM

Feeding & Settling

Night nurse may offer a bottle of expressed milk or formula, or bring your baby to you for nursing, followed by burping, diapering and soothing.

11:00PM

Parent settle for the night

Once your baby is comfortable, you can head to bed while your night nurse takes over the surrounding newborn care.

12:00AM

Light reset & prepare

Bottles or pump parts used during the shift are washed, the feeding area is reset and your baby’s feeds, diapers and sleep are documented.

01:30AM

Overnight feed

Your baby is fed according to your family’s plan, or brought to you if nursing. Your night nurse a handles diapering, burping and resettling afterward so you can return to sleep as quickly as possible.

02:30AM

Soothing and safe sleep

Your night nurse responds to your baby’s cues, offers comfort and helps them settle back into their safe sleep space.

04:30AM

Early morning feed

Another feed, diaper change and settling may take place depending on your baby’s age and natural rhythm.

05:30AM

Morning reset

Your doula tidies the immediate feeding area, washes items used overnight and completes your baby’s care notes.

06:00AM

Morning handoff and recap

Before leaving, your night nurse gives you a clear update on feeds, diapers, sleep and anything notable from the night.

Why overnight newborn care matters to Toronto families

The newborn stage rarely follows a neat nighttime schedule. Frequent feeds, short stretches of sleep and postpartum recovery can make nights especially demanding. Overnight care gives your family an experienced extra set of hands—helping with the work around feeding and newborn care so you can protect opportunities for rest and recovery.

These statistics describe the realities of newborn care, postpartum sleep and maternal well-being; they do not mean overnight doula or newborn care services prevent or treat medical or mental-health conditions. Feeding and sleep needs vary by baby, and nursing or pumping parents may still need to wake overnight.

2-4 hrs

is often all the sleep you get at once

During the first weeks and months with a newborn, parents can expect to sleep in stretches of only two to four hours at a time.

(Canada.ca)

7-9 hrs

is the recommended amount of adult sleep

Adults generally need seven to nine hours of quality sleep each night—something that can be difficult to achieve when caring for a newborn. (Canada.ca)

8+ feeds

can happen in just 24 hours

Health Canada notes that newborns typically feed at least eight times in 24 hours after the first day of life, and some babies feed considerably more often.

49%

experience emotional or mental-health challenges

Almost half of Canadian mothers and birthing parents surveyed reported emotional or mental-health challenges during pregnancy or postpartum.

60%

experience challenges after birth

Among Canadian parents who reported emotional or mental-health challenges, 60% said they first began during the postpartum period.

1/2 a year

of room-sharing is recommended

Health Canada recommends that babies sleep in their own crib, cradle or bassinet in the parent’s room for the first six months.

How many nights should you book?

One or two nights per week

A good fit for families who want dependable recovery nights, extra support after particularly demanding days or a more budget-conscious option.

Three or four nights per week

Ideal for families who want more consistent overnight newborn support and regular opportunities to rest, recover and reset between shifts.

Five to seven nights per week

Often helpful in the earliest postpartum weeks, after a Caesarean or difficult recovery, with twins or multiples, or when there is limited family support at home.

Short-term daily coverage

Useful during especially intensive periods, such as the first days home from hospital, a partner returning to work or a temporary change in family support.

A flexible block of hours

Best for families who want to adjust their schedule as feeding, sleep and recovery needs change. Hours can be allocated across available nights, subject to practitioner availability.

Larger schedules may require two or more practitioners. Boboto should explain the team, handoff method and schedule before the contract is signed.

Families who often find daytime care very helpful

No matter the Postpartum experience you have, Boboto creates a safe space for you and your newborn to feel taken care of and nourished.

Having a baby for the first time comes with a steep learning curve. A postpartum doula can provide hands-on newborn care guidance, help you understand your baby’s cues and build confidence with feeding, soothing, bathing and everyday infant care.

You should not have to carry every part of postpartum alone. A postpartum doula can provide consistent, practical support with your newborn, feeding, meals and rest while giving you an experienced person to lean on as you settle into parenthood.

Postpartum recovery deserves time and support. Daytime doula care can help lighten the physical load after a vaginal or Caesarean birth by assisting with newborn care, meals, rest and baby-related household tasks while you focus on healing.

If your village lives far away, a postpartum doula can become a reliable part of your local support system. Our Toronto and GTA postpartum doulas offer practical in-home help, newborn guidance and a steady presence during the early weeks with your baby.

Caring for more than one newborn can make feeding, settling and finding time to rest especially demanding. Postpartum doula support for twins and multiples provides an experienced extra set of hands while helping your family develop routines that work for more than one baby.

Welcoming a new baby changes the rhythm of the whole household. A daytime postpartum doula can support newborn care and practical tasks so you have more space to recover, spend time with older children and adjust to life as a growing family.

When a partner returns to work, the daytime hours can suddenly feel much longer. In-home postpartum doula care provides hands-on newborn support, companionship and practical help so you have opportunities to eat, shower, rest and recover during the day.

I reached out to Tracy from Boboto Doula to book postpartum care (day and night) and I am so grateful I did because WOW! What a difference it has made in my healing. As a second-time, repeat C-section mom, I knew what kind of support I would need as I didn’t have any during my first and Boboto Doula delivered and more!

We had a wonderful experience with our night doula, Jenny. She was very knowledgeable, experienced, and caring throughout our time with her. As first-time parents, having her support with our newborn gave us so much confidence and peace of mind. Jenny was attentive to our baby’s needs, and offered us many practical advice.

FAQ

Questions about hiring Postpartum Support in Toronto

  • Not necessarily. A postpartum doula is a non-medical support professional. Some Boboto practitioners are also CNO-registered nurses, but nursing care is provided only when a registered nurse is identified and working within the booked service and their professional scope.

  • Care can begin after you return home or later in the postpartum period, depending on your needs and practitioner availability. Booking during pregnancy gives Boboto more opportunity to reserve preferred dates.

  • There is no universal number. Consider your recovery, partner schedule, feeding plan, nearby family, older children and budget. Many families begin with consistent four- or five-hour visits and adjust after seeing what the first weeks require.

  • Yes. Our postpartum care practitioners are trained to support you with  newborn care, meals, hydration, rest and household logistics while you follow clinical recovery instructions from your doctor. We do not assess your incision or provide medical treatment.

  • Yes, within their training. Boboto supports nursing, pumping, bottle and combination feeding without judgment. Complex or persistent concerns are referred to an IBCLC or regulated provider.

  • Coverage varies. OHIP does not fund doula care. Some employer or spending-account plans may reimburse eligible services, but Boboto cannot guarantee approval. Receipts must identify the actual practitioner and service delivered.
